Oathkeeper

After the long battle and even losing a heart at Hollow Bastion, Sora along with fellow company, return to Traverse Town and Kairi is finally safe with them. They soon separate in town and Sora reports to Leon of the incident back at the castle. Afterwards, Sora walks around and finds Kairi at the underground water tunnel in the Second District.

Kairi: A light, at the end of the tunnel --
Sora: Oh, your Grandma's story right?
Kairi: That's right, we were together.
Sora: You know what's funny? I looked everywhere for you, but you were with me all along. Finally we're together, Kairi. Now, it's time to get Riku back.
Kairi: You think it will ever be the same again between us? Riku's lost his --
Sora: When I turned into a heartless, you saved me, remember? I was lost in the darkness. I couldn't find my way. As I stumble through the dark, I started forgetting things -- my friends, who I was. The darkness almost swallowed me, but then I heard a voice, your voice. You brought me back.
Kairi: I didn't want to just forget about you, Sora. I couldn't.
Sora: That's it! Our hearts are connected. And the lights in our hearts broke through the darkness -- I saw that light. I think that's what saved me. No matter how deep the darkness, a light shines within. I guess it's more than just a fairytale.

Kairi decided that she wants to come along and help Sora find Riku so he can be saved from the darkness this time. Sora refused, because he couldn’t let Kairi be taken away again. Even though they won’t be together physically, Sora tells her that they will be together no matter what.

Kairi: Okay. You win. Take this. It's my lucky charm. Be sure to bring it back to me!
Sora: Don't worry, I will.
Kairi: Promise?
Sora: Promise.
Kairi: Don't ever forget. Where ever you go, I'm always with you.

The lucky charm is that Kairi gave to Sora is a symbol and a promise saying that what ever happens, no matter how long it takes, she wants Sora to come back to her. Also if you look closer to the lucky charm, it looks almost like Sora or it is Sora! It has the same goofy smile and crazy, but awesome hair.

In the ending of Kingdom Hearts II, Sora and Riku finally return to Destiny Islands. As Sora swims to the shore and he goes up to Kairi and hands her back the lucky charm and his promise has been fulfilled.
